John Kenneth Gott grew up in Marshall, VA and developed a love of books at a very young age. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1946 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in history at Bridgewater College. He then attended Catholic University to earn his master's degree in library science.

John became a school librarian and continued to pursue his love of history, especially that of his hometown. His extensive research of the Marshall area led him to write several books on the subject including "High in Old Virginia's Piedmont: A History of Marshall," and "The Dixon Valley: Its First 250 Years." All the while, his collection of documents, photos, and other items pertaining to Fauquier's history continued to grow.

John passed away in August 2004 at age 75. Over decades of researching the history of his native Fauquier County, John Gott accumulated a large personal library of historical and genealogical information. Upon his death, he left his collection to a non-profit foundation to share his library with others.
